The Times Around The Final
The 1942 East Cork Junior A Championship Final was held in Cloyne on November 22nd. Ballinacurra lineout against a strong Midleton team. Ballinacurra lined out with six players from the village, six from Midleton two from Cloyne and one from Ballymacoda. Cloyne had also a sub, the popular Willie John Ring , a brother of th great Cork player Christy Ring. At the time of the final World War 2 was three years old, rations were rampant transport scarce with “GAS BAGS” often being used for fuel. The five mile journey saw most travel by “skank’s Mare” to the town of Cloyne based in the grange, Midleton, now the proprty of the Park Hotel , where the 21th Battallion of the Irish Army, where boxing was strong. The member of the club ran to Clyone. Wages at the time were around £2-12-00 a week.Money was scarce and Joby Walsh one of the heroes of Ballinacurra made a “bomb” when he backed the village to win.He had £100 on the game and many members of the Midleton side were broke for the weeks following the final.

Path To The Final
On their way to the 1942 final Ballinacurra beat Little Island or as they are known today Erin’s Own. The score was 10-2 to 4-0 They accounted for Dungorney by 6-5 to 3-4. and St Caterines in the semi-final

The Match
The match was a played in high spirit with some fine hurley skills in evidence (there is no report on the match apologies) One moment in the match that will be remember for a good while was :A cow was grazing the Cloyne pitch on final day as a terrific hurling tie swung to and fro, two great stalwarts, Bobby Ryng Ballinacurra and James O’Brien Midleton went for ball that landed in some cow dung. Both slashed muck and ball.the duo escaped the dung but those around were covered . The half time score was Ballinacurra 2-2, Midleton 2-1
